Call for participation in Trashion Refashion Show Steering Committee

When: 5:30 PM
Where: Rachael’s Café (Third & Lincoln)
Description: The Trashion Refashion Show is an annual fundraising event held each spring for Bloomington’s Center for Sustainable Living. The event showcases submitted fashion in two categories: pieces made from recycled items (bottles, tires, you name it) or those refashioned from an existing garment.  Students who would like to contribute to the planning process and assist in promoting the show to students (both potential designers and attendees) are encouraged to come to the meeting. “Assessment of Carbon Storage Potential in the New Albany Shale Gas Play with Enhanced Gas Recovery using Reservoir Simulation”.  Colloquium by Faye Liu, IU Department of Geological Sciences.

Description:  The final seminar in the Indiana Geological Survey’s Carbon Sequestration Colloquium Series features Faye Liu from the IU Department of Geological Sciences who will discuss the potential to sequester carbon dioxide while simultaneously increasing natural gas production from the New Albany Shale Formation in Indiana.

Volunteers for Change MLK Day Food Drive

When: 1:00 – 5:00 PM
Where: Rachel’s Café (Third & Lincoln)
Description: Volunteers will work in groups of 2-4 to canvass a neighborhood for donations of food or money for Hoosier Hills Food Bank.  Volunteers will be given a map of a neighborhood, bags for collecting, and simple instructions on how to approach people that include a folder with a Hoosier Hills Food Bank logo on it to help identify them. When each group is finished, they will return to Rachael’s to drop off their collections in HHFB barrels and boxes.  Vote for the Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale to win $1,000 in the GOOD 100 Challenge: Sharing is the New Owning!
Hoosier to Hoosier (H2H) is a reuse program that aims to divert reusable items from the landfill during student move-out & to prevent additional resource consumption by selling collected items to students and community members in order to raise funds for local charities. Visit to vote anytime before 3PM EST on December 15th. Some details:
– Each person can vote once during the voting period
– Voting is open for eight days (December 8th to 15th)
– We suggest using Firefox or Google Chrome web browsers to avoid voting issues

The Student Sustainability Council (SSC) is accepting nominations for the first annual Michael Hamburger Award for Sustainable Action.
The SSC will present this award to a member of the Indiana University family who has generated awareness of, interest in, and novel approaches to matters of environmental, economic, and social sustainability.  Nominations are open to faculty, staff, and IUB students.  Anonymous submissions are accepted.  Call for Entries: AASHE’s ‘Higher Education Occupation’ Project, Deadline 12/15
The connection between the Occupy movement and the establishment of a just and sustainable society is sometimes clear and sometimes foggy. To better help us all understand the relationship, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is soliciting the thoughts of the higher education community. Students, faculty, staff and administrators: we invite you to submit a photo and statement of 100 words or less on what the Occupy movement means to you in the context of higher education sustainability. AASHE will compile the results into a photo essay. The feature will appear in AASHE’s Campus Sustainability Perspectives blog, be announced in the AASHE Bulletin, and be included in the upcoming “2011 Higher Education Sustainability Review.” Please submit a high-resolution photo of yourself or a photo related to your experience in the campus Occupy movement.  Got aquarium?
Moving out and can’t take your aquarium pets with you? Don’t dump them in the lake or into local waterways! Many aquarium plants and animals are non-native species that can wreak havoc on our local environment.  Donate new and used school supplies to Teachers Warehouse
CWA Local 4730 is once again this holiday season sponsoring a drive on campus to collect items for the nonprofit organization, Teachers Warehouse. For those not familiar with Teachers Warehouse – area elementary and middle school teachers from Monroe and surrounding counties can visit Teachers Warehouse, located here in Bloomington, and pick up items free of charge for students who can’t afford to buy their own school supplies and that they can use in their classrooms. Items needed include notebooks, crayons, markers, glue sticks, craft paper, and craft items. Last year we collected hundreds of items. This is the third year CWA Local 4730 has sponsored this drive and each year the number of items collected continues to grow, as does, unfortunately, the need.  This year’s collection drive is from November 28 through December 16, and a collection box is located in HPER 116.

Sign a petition for local transit funding referenda
Bloomington Transportation Options for People (B-TOP) has passed a resolution supporting a petition from the Central Indiana Regional Transit Authority calling for dedicated funding for transportation. IU Global Environmental Brigades seeks students for 2012 Spring Break trip to Panama
Global Environmental Brigades is looking for passionate and motivated students who are interested in getting involved with sustainability and public health projects in Panama during the 2012 Spring Break. Students will be traveling to Central America to volunteer in various projects that directly impact a rural community. Past projects include building latrines, installing brand new water filtration systems, constructing eco-stoves, and educating indigenous communities on a variety of sustainability topics, like proper waste removal, through educational workshops. IUGEB allows students to have a unique opportunity to incorporate their own knowledge, interests, and skills in a productive and meaningful way while empowering community members to become self-sufficient.  Common Circle Education announces cross-country bike trip & permaculture design course
This three-month intensive course combines our Urban Permaculture and Regenerative Leadership Certificate training, followed by a Wilderness First Aid training before we head on the road cycling from Eugene, Oregon all the way across America to Washington DC (we’ll be roughly following the
TransAM bike route – about 4200 miles), promoting and learning about sustainable living and intentional communities. Program takes place between June 1 – August 31, 2012 and is designed for beginner to intermediate cyclists. More details @

 Park Break program offers expenses-paid program in park management and sustainable living, applications due Jan. 20
The Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands has been asked to recruit Indiana University graduate students for the Park Break program, an all-expenses-paid, park-based field seminar that has a focus this year on sustainable living. Even if your institution’s “spring break” isn’t during the program’s time, graduate students that have completed courses and are focused on writing may be interested in this opportunity to network and gain a unique experience.  The Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands can assist IU graduate students with application assistance and advice.
The next Park Break session will be held March 19–23, 2012, at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Pennsylvania. The 2012 Park Break project will be the creation of a curriculum on sustainable living, aimed at 8th-grade students, to be used at the Pocono Environmental Education Center.  The Park Break team will draw on the context of several energy projects that are affecting or could affect the park, such as natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation north of the park, or the proposal for a powerline that would cross the park. Park Break is designed for graduate students contemplating a career in park and land-use management or related research and education fields.

 “Just Label It” campaign offers student fellowships
The “Just Label It: We Have a Right to Know” campaign advocates for the FDA to mandate the labeling of genetically engineered foods.  Habitat for Humanity ReStore Seeks Volunteers
As a volunteer run organization, the ReStore has made great strides this past year, such as sponsoring an energy star rated Habitat home as well as diverting over 228 tons of goods from the landfill.  Winter Thermostat Settings – a message from the IU Physical Plant
Cold weather is here, so please set down the thermostats to the winter set point of 68 degrees for classrooms, offices, hallways, lounges and general rooms (excluding labs with critical temperature requirements). Set points can be slightly higher for rooms that have window, ventilation or other comfort problems. Vestibules should be set at 60 degrees. The thermostats that control cooling only units should be left at 78 degrees.
Please contact the Operations Dispatchers to have Work Request initiated for each building involved with this work. The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development is calling for papers that focus on university or college sustainability efforts related to food and agriculture. Papers could be based on case studies, surveys, focus groups, impact analysis, or other research based on your campus’s or students’ experiences.  U8 network seeks IU student involvement
The U8 is a global network that connects students and institutions from around the world to discuss international development issues ( We are a non-profit organisation that has been running since 2005 and has previously brought together students from around the world to discuss development issues with the desire to engage policy makers and the media. Our summits in Warwick and Cambridge brought the student voice to the attention of governments and the world’s media.
In 2011 we are undertaking our most ambitious projects to date and would love for students Indiana University to be part of this. We already have universities from all over the world who are going to participate, including the prestigious universities of Oxford, Cambidge and Harvard.This November we will be hosting a global online summit that will connect students from all around the world for a weekend of truly inclusive discussion. Student groups from more developed countries will be twinned with those from less developed countries, giving members the chance to gain a exciting and honest first-hand perspective on life in developing countries, donor countries and the public opinion in each towards the other. Of course, as we are a non-profit organisation, all our services are cost free. All we ask for are interested students.

 Monroe County Pharmaceutical Disposal Program
The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office this week announced a new effort to collect and properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired pharmaceutical drugs and controlled substances in order to reduce the risk of illegal diversion, drug abuse, overdose, and environmental risks resulting from improper disposal.   For more information visit and follow the link to the Monroe County Pharmaceutical Safe Disposal Program, or call 349-DRUG.

During the storms last May, the campus and community lost an estimated 500-700 trees, some of which were 150 years old or more.  Help replace these monuments in our green city!  Contact (or 349.3498) to make a donation. Anything you contribute will help send a signal to tornadoes to dissipate into refreshing spring breezes.

Student Conservation Association Internships
The SCA is one of the biggest partners for national parks and forests. Each year, they send thousands of youth across the country to get conservation experience in awesome places. Living expenses, housing, and round trip travel provided. Internships run from 3-12 months and are available in all 50 states. See for more information and to apply.

Pick Up America Internships
Pick Up America seeks interns year-round. It’s a great opportunity for young people to get nonprofit experience while getting the chance to travel slowly. Students work closelywith the core PUA team. Travel with us, pick up trash, and focus your skills on a specific project thisyear. Our goal is to make it to Denver by November.
